Reading

Reading lies at the heart of learning at Millfield. Our goal is to instill a lifelong love of books, giving children the Courage to tackle new texts, the Ambition to become fluent readers, the Respect to appreciate diverse voices, the Excellence to master comprehension, and the Spirit to enjoy reading as a source of inspiration.

Early reading is supported through phonics, enabling all children to gain the tools needed to read confidently. As they progress, pupils explore a wide variety of literature – fiction, non-fiction and poetry – broadening their vocabulary, imagination, and understanding of the world.

Our reading curriculum builds comprehension, inference and critical thinking skills. Children are encouraged to read widely and often, both in class and independently, fostering a love of reading that underpins achievement across the curriculum.
